Budgies (budgerigars) (Melopsittacus undulates)

Probably the most popular bird in the world, highly intelligent, friendly and easy to tame. The Budgie is a great first bird for most bird keepers. Needs a lot of love and attention. Happy in both indoor and outdoor Cages and Aviaries. Can be kept alone as long as they have enough interaction with their owners, normally peaceful towards other birds. Available in a wide range of colours and patterns.

Chinese Painted Quail

(Coturnix chinensis)

Great ground bird for most aviaries, reasonably peaceful but males can fight if not given enough room. Females lay eggs almost constantly but very rarely sit properly or raise them successfully. May require a warmer ground shelter for the cooler months. Extremely good jumper, but doesn’t fly very well. Also available in a Silver variety.

Canary (Serinus canaria domesticus)

One of the most well known cage birds, suits indoor cages and outdoor aviaries. Normally only males sing but sometimes the females will as well. Available in a range of colour types such as Yellow, White, Green Orange and Red as well as Pied.

Zebra Finch

(Taeniopygia guttata)

A very well known and commonly available bird, Very well suited to indoor cages but thrives out doors as well. Great Finch for beginners as it is very hardy and breeds readily.

Gouldian Finch

(Erythrura gouldiae)

Amazingly coloured Finches from Australia, these birds will brighten up any room. Best suited to indoor Aviaries and larger cages, they require additional heating during the colder months. Several Colour morphs such as the White Breasted are commonly available.

(Amadina fasciata)

A stunning little finch which is rather hardy and does best in an Outdoor Aviary with additional heating over the cooler months, Can be a little aggressive so should be kept with larger birds or on its own. An African Finch that is Endangered in the wild, Tends to be very hard to breed so is a worthy challenge for the dedicated breeder.

Bengalese Finch (Lonchura striata domestica)

An extremely hardy, active and attractive bird that makes a great first bird for beginners. Very easy to breed and has interesting social behavior. Does well in just about any enclosure, inside or out.

Indian Ringneck

(Psittacula krameri)

A spectacular larger parrot that is intelligent and hardy. It is suitable for beginner parrot keepers with an Aviary that provides enough flying room. Can be aggressive to other birds so should be kept in a Ringneck only enclosure, or with other larger parrots in a large enclosure. Available in a wide range of colours such as blue, grey, yellow, green and white.

(Neophema pulchella)

Arguably the most attractive variant of the Turquoisine. These beautiful birds require a large aviary to allow them to spread their wings. More peaceful than many similar sized parrots though males can become aggressive during breeding season or if kept with incompatible birds. Likes to spend time on the ground fossicking for seeds so Ideally should have a grassed patch in the Aviary.

Splendid Parakeet (Neophema splendid)

A very popular Parakeet hailing from South Western Australia. They have a very quiet temperament and are a smaller sized parakeet so are suitable for more modest Aviaries. Can be a bit delicate so are best suited to more experienced bird keepers.

Elegant Parakeet (Neophema elegans)

A stunning Parakeet with more subtle colouring than many others, it has a quiet beauty about it. They make wonderful beginners Parakeets as they are hardy, reasonably friendly and are ready breeders. They do best in a planted aviary with a grass patch for them to fossick in.

Red-Rump (Psephotus haematonotus)

A very popular mid-sized parrot suitable for outdoor Aviaries and larger Cages. They have very strong personalities and can be quite easily hand tamed. They need to be able to regularly stretch their wings. Can be a bit aggressive towards other birds especially if over crowded, so care needs to be taken when deciding on Aviary mates. Various colour morphs such as the Albino and Lutino varieties are available

A very popular mid-sized parrot suitable for both indoor and outdoor Cages and Aviaries. One of the most popular choices for the beginner bird keeper, they are highly intelligent and can easily be trained. Make great pets and enjoy attention and interaction. They like to have a wide range of toys available to them to prevent boredom and depression.
